A Serendipitous Find by Our Founder
Here at Sundance, we are fortunate to work with many of the
finest artisans across the USA and around the world. But sometimes it takes a
lucky moment of happenstance to find a one-of-a-kind artistic treasure.
Some years ago, our founder Robert Redford was visiting a
friend near Aspen when they ran across a hotel being closed down. They stopped
to take a look around and were captivated by the hotel’s incredibly large
Native American rug.
Their timing was perfect. The hotel owner told them the rug
was for sale and mentioned that it dated back to the 1940s, when it was woven
in the Pine Springs area of Arizona. Mr. Redford was captivated by the rug’s
artistry and thought it might make a wonderful addition to his personal
collection.
A deal was worked out and Mr. Redford was able to drive off
with the rug in the back seat of his car!
Today, this impressive piece of woven art serves as a
much-admired backdrop in the Tree Room restaurant at the Sundance resort.

ReplyDeleteAfter spending many of my formative years living on the Diné Nation, I have grown to love and admire Diné textiles and other arts. The Sundance Tree Room blanket is stunning! From the serrated pattern to the kiva step border, it is a visual feast. It reminds me of the smell of pinon smoke coming from the glowing embers of a smoldering fire on the floor of a Hogan or the way the light dances on ancient petroglyphs in the setting sun. The only thing more beautiful about this picture is the photo of Robert Redford as Jeremiah Johnson from the 1972 movie! I really don’t need another Pendleton blanket, but will be ordering the Tree Room blanket as soon as possible. If I can’t cuddle up with Robert Redford, I can at least stay warm with a blanket pattern he admires.
