Merino wool from Australia is not like ordinary wool. And Woolloomooloo does not make ordinary shoes. That’s why we’re so excited to offer this innovative brand for the first time in our Winter Catalog.

The Australian History

Woolloomooloo uses only sustainably sourced merino wool from their home country of Australia. A brief history: Merino sheep were introduced to Australia from Spain, soon after colonization in 1797.

While the harsh Aussie landscape proved too unforgiving for much of the introduced flora and fauna from Europe, the merino sheep thrived and since have become an iconic part of the country’s landscape.

Merino wool is an all-natural fiber with an unsurpassed reputation for quality. It contains lanolin, a natural wax that makes the wool feels soft, not scratchy, which is ideal for anyone with sensitive skin. It’s insulating, breathable and controls moisture, a combination that keeps you warm in winter and cool in summer. Merino wool from Australia is considered the world’s finest and is regularly used in elegant Italian suits and clothing.

Soft, Seamless Comfort

After years of development, Woolloomooloo learned to combine merino wool with 3D knitting technology. The wool is expertly spun and knitted into seamless, flexible and oh-so-comfortable shoes. They’re also lightweight, naturally odor-resistant and designed to last for years. Each upper is paired with an ergonomic footbed for support in all the right places.

Lastly, we love that merino wool is completely organic and chemical-free, so it’s not just your feet that will feel good about your purchase.

For winter travels or summers at home, we are excited to support Woolloomooloo with our featured Baaarbara Shoe. These Woolloomooloo shoes offer a stylish and sustainable way for your feet to be comfortable.

Tej Kothari Sundance Catalog Jewelry Artisan

Sundance artisan Tej Kothari has a passion for creating jewelry of timeless elegance. The master jeweler’s distinctive vision is to take the detailing and proportion of antique jewelry and update it with his own modern, minimalist sensibility. We are in awe of his craftsmanship.

Tej was first exposed to jewelry at a very young age, thanks to his mother who ran a successful antique jewelry venture. It was in college when he was first encouraged to create his own designs as a way to help pay for grad school (at the time, he was majoring in molecular biology). Thanks to his mother’s tutelage, his first pieces sold quickly and the creative freedom he felt soon eclipsed his plans for further education.

Modern & Minimal

Today, many of Tej’s captivating designs are inspired by nature and its tiniest wonders. His pieces stand out for their refined, hand-crafted character and visual balance, qualities that create graceful wearability. Stones are custom cut or hand-selected and are primarily set in beautiful 18k gold.

Discover the inspiration behind Tej’s latest offerings:

The Mystic Lake Ring is Tej’s stunning take on the classic halo ring.  Two rows of diamonds surround the center aquamarine to make this an heirloom-quality ring that’s designed to complement any look.

Tanzanite Falls Earrings have a tanzanite and diamond “cinnamon fern” design. This was inspired by nature he observed while walking trails during a recent visit to Rhode Island. Spring distilled into an earring!

Another classic Kothari design, the elegant Aqua Raindrop Necklace has simplicity at its core. Like drops of rain, the window-set aquamarines playfully shimmer across the neckline, while subtle color variations add visual texture. Stunning by itself, it layers easily with other pieces too.

Bloom in Blue Earrings represent an amalgamation of the wildflowers spotted on that same Rhode Island trip. This eye-catching style features aquamarine and tanzanite petals and diamond accents.

Starlight Chandelier Earrings exude old-world charm while using modern proportions. With their diamond window accented by a swaying fringe of polka diamonds, these truly are petite works of art.

Part of his stargazing-inspired “starry night” collection, the Stars Aligned Diamond Ring has a double shank to provide a strong presence to its otherwise tailored look. The elegantly modern ring dazzles with brilliant-cut diamonds lined up and shining brightly.

His L’eau Necklace combines an antique sensibility with a modern, tailored look. Two asymmetrical polki diamonds offer a brilliant yet understated presence that gives this necklace its defining look. Think minimalist style with maximum effect!

Marguerite Diamond Hoop Earrings pay homage to the abundant wildflowers found in the coastal bluffs and rolling hills of the Bay Area. His diamond "wildflower" and classic marquise hoops are an elegant way to give yourself flowers every day.

The delicate Starry Starry Night Earrings are inspired less by van Gough than by his observation of star patterns during clear Northern California nights. Like starlight, the brilliant-cut diamonds will add a sparkle to any evening.

One of our favorite Tej masterpieces is the Diamond Profusion Ring. This exquisite design was created with a shimmering mosaic of rose- and brilliant-cut diamonds in this handcrafted ring and with a satin-finished 18kt gold. This is a jewelry statement you won’t want to miss!

These magnificent works from Tej are online-only, with several being Sundance exclusives. Discover our entire Tej Kothari fine jewelry collection here, and experience the enduring joy of wearing a Kothari design for yourself.

Throughout Nepal, there are craft cooperatives where women artisans gather to create textiles. At one such cooperative we recently came across a most remarkable blanket that we call the Whimsy Patchwork Throw.

Sundance Catalog Whimsy Patchwork Throw by Nepalese Artisans

The story behind the throw is as unique as its coloration and design. For starters, the small cooperative has been run by the same core group of Nepalese women for more than three decades! Their expertise includes block printing, felting, sewing, weaving, embroidery and much more.

Last year, these talented artisans were experimenting with a new technique (see the process below), one that combined wool fleece, cotton prints and chiffon to create a single fabric. They created a few intriguing samples but had no clear idea for a product.

Enter Andrea and Gayle Shackleton. The knitwear designers (and sisters) from Northern California have collaborated with the artisans for many of those same 30 years, ever since their very first volunteer development project. They were immediately impressed by how the combination of fabric and fleece takes on a whole new quality and rich texture.

Together, these friends from opposite sides of the globe came up with the idea of a crazy quilt! Each piece would be different, not just from front to back but also throughout each square. The design uniquely showcased the unusual new fabric, resulting in glowing colors seemingly emanating from fleece layers within. It’s like a painting made out of cloth!

The design project would eventually bring the team to other local studios for additional ideas and inspiration. Old friends were celebrated, new friends were made and stories shared. It was a rewarding experience for all.

The process, step by step:

1. The team starts with a stack of fabrics.

2. Raw wool fleece in bright colors is selected.

3. Fleece and fabric color combinations are matched up.

4. The print fabric is laid down first, then a fleece layer of another design, topped by a layer of chiffon in small pieces and many more colors.

5. Once combined, the fabric and fleece take on a whole new quality and texture.

6. The third layer, chiffon, is a wet process.

7. The throw is now a sandwich, with fabric prints on one side, wool fleece in the center and chiffon on the other side. Each layer has a design of its own.

8. They are wetted, rolled, and locked together by the wool fibers to become a single fabric.

The finished Whimsy Patchwork Throw is a treasure, combining the warmth of wool, the softness of cotton and the luxurious feel of chiffon, in a delightful and one-of-a-kind patchwork design. It would make a colorful and functional addition to any home.

Our photography team regularly shoots in some beautiful natural settings, but few places can compare to the splendor we recently found at Glacier National Park in Montana. Here’s an inside peek at how our winter shoot came to be.

Finding Inspiration

We plan in advance for all of the photoshoots that happen during the year to give us time to curate the best images for each catalog. This may be surprising, but our winter catalogs are always shot during the warm, summer months. So, we seek out a location that is wintery and chilly enough, even during summer, to allow magical winter backdrops and to match the catalog theme.

While Glacier has long been at the top of our list for a shoot, it usually gets quite crowded in summer. This year we were lucky to get lodging and find secluded locations in the park. To find these areas, we always take a trip to scout out the area a month or two beforehand.

During our scouts, we often discover locations that we previously didn’t have in mind. This year we came upon a beautiful lake and discovered there was an amazing boat to use as a prop that was perfect for our vision. We knew this was a gem we couldn’t find elsewhere, and we ended up turning it into a pivotal part of our lake shoot.

Serendipity in the Park

Before each shoot, our VP of Creative prepares an image shot list for all we need to accomplish each day while on location. While planning is critical, our photoshoots are always an adventure because we explore a variety of areas we didn’t know existed. This allows the team to be flexible and choose which shots to take at which locations.

Thinking about Glacier, with a smile on her face, she says “It’s not that hard to take shots in an environment that’s that epic.”

Things We Loved at Glacier

Going-to-the-Sun Road: This scenic mountain road is simply stunning. Tip: We left our lodging before dawn so we could get there by sunrise. It was epic! The road even has its own app created by Gypsy Guide that you can download for a self-guided tour of the park from your car (even when offline).

Where to Stay: We suggest staying at the Apgar Village Lodge. The cabins and lodges sit on the shores of the largest lake in Glacier National Park, Lake McDonald.

Town to Explore: Whitefish, Montana is the cutest town that is a must-see when exploring Glacier. It was named one of the “Top 25 Ski Towns in the World” by National Geographic.

What to Eat: Eddie’s Café & Gifts was great, and they have amazing ice cream, too!

When to Visit: Make sure to get your reservations early! Go in summer when the weather is mild and the scenic beauty is at its peak. Late August remains more available during the summer months.

We hope you enjoy the setting of Glacier National Park for our winter catalog photography. Read our blog to learn more about the inspiration behind our Winter Collection.

The Artisan Commitment from Nepal

At the heart of the Sundance heritage is featuring artisans who value sustainable practices, both for their workers and the environment. The textile designer that works with Nepalese Artisans is one such partner, and we couldn’t be prouder to share her unique collection with you.

This woman-owned company has beautiful designs that we love for their joyful color palettes, exquisite details and classic French knot stitches, and Sundance customers whole-heartedly agree!

We also appreciate the commitment from the Artisans in Nepal, who assist in creating these designs, to following fair trade regulations, which ensures the Nepal-based knitters are paid a living wage. And, because items are hand-dyed, handspun, and hand-knit with 100% natural yarns, the textile designer and her Nepalese Artisans leave a decidedly small carbon footprint.

How Do They Make Their Items So Fun and Distinctive?

“Each of our designs is inspired by vintage textiles or antique elements such as furniture, brooches, and wallpaper,” explains the textile designer. “We keep each design fresh by using modern colors and a dash of beading.”

She also emphasizes, “All of our items are handmade in Nepal. There is no place in the world that does hand-knitting and hand-embroidery quite like Nepal. We work with hundreds of artisans and each piece is made completely by hand: the dyeing process, each knit stitch, embroidery, and beading.”

The Sundance Collection

The Sundance Collection includes many captivating winter items suitable for both everyday warmth:
Sunlit Blossoms Pouch  |  Forever in Bloom Pouch  |  Mountain Vail Pouch  |  Greta Handwarmers

“We pay homage,” sums up the female textile designer, “to the way items used to be made; from high-quality materials and designed to last.” She adds, “I’m honored to work with such wonderfully kind-hearted and talented Nepali people.” We are thrilled to continue supporting her and her artisans in their commitment to creating high-quality, sustainable items that maintain the artisanal style we value at Sundance.

sundance catalog winter sweaters

Our winter collection was inspired by the dunes of Cape Cod and the authentic American crafting tradition that is rooted there. From the look of handcrafted patterned sweaters to patchwork quilts or a touch of nautical detail juxtaposed with pretty feminine items… these are cozy, yet universal layers for chilly, crisp days or the occasional Nor’easter.

To make it all uniquely Sundance, we updated pieces with fun, feminine and energetic colors that carry you from winter to spring. Items can be layered up for warmth now or worn separately later. Discover new combinations and some of our favorite layering suggestions this winter season:

Bold Color Combos

Chase away winter’s drab grays with rich colors. Our cocoon-style Covetable Coat layers beautifully over the waffle-knit Joyful Stripe Thermal Top. Both can be elevated by adding the Calico Kaleidoscope Scarf as an eye-catching accent.

The Perfect Pair: Our Vintage Quilted Jacket and Combat Boots

This vintage-inspired Hyannis Reversible Jacket features the utmost attention to detail. Each print was hand-selected, stitched together, overdyed and made reversible to create a unique, quilted style. We think it’s the iconic artisanal collectible of the whole collection. It’s perfectly paired over a tee or can be worn with a pretty woven blouse to dress it up or down. Complete the look with our combat-inspired, yet fashion-forward, Maidenfield Boots.

Wide Cropped Pants Are In

One captivating new trend is the wide-cut look found in Voyager Trousers – they’re slightly cropped and have a high waistband to show a new proportion. These pair with any tee, which should be tucked in for an on-trend look. Combine with our Painted Dreams Top for relaxed outings, and finish off the ensemble with our woven Climbing Hyacinth Belt.

Ankle boots are the perfect companion to wide/cropped pants, but for warm-weather travels, we love Woolloomooloo’s Baaabara Shoes or our super-comfy Rowena Sandals.

Cinch Our Coastal Vest with a Belt

Whether in Provincetown or your hometown, one trend we’re seeing a lot of vests over a pair of relaxed jeans to show off a stylish belt. One of our favorite examples is the feminine and hopelessly romantic Coastal Secrets Vest paired with the Hera Belt. There are many belt and belt bag options to choose from to effortlessly accent this outfit.

Our Final Layering Style: The Undeniably Warm Throw

For extra warmth while cozying up by the fire, our Whimsy Patchwork Throw is a beautiful choice. The fact that it’s handspun and hand-dyed by women in a Fair Trade co-op in Nepal makes it feel even better.

Sweaters, Refreshed

Head out into the elements wrapped in warm layers of distinction. The Fair Isle-style Southbrook Cardigan, complete with chunky knotted yarn detailing for loads of interest, is perfectly complemented by our colorful Climbing Rose Scarf. On milder days, pair the open-front Laurel Breeze Cardigan, offered in a bold, rust color with its luxuriously soft and feminine boucle yarn, with our delightful Everyday Essence Tee.

Another essential is the Colorful Dance Cardigan with the Cliffside Bloom Top. The subtle color blends of the cardigan paired with the soft florals of the blouse provide you with an effortless style this winter.

Be Bold

Finally, though it’s not our pick for a New England winter, we couldn’t resist sharing a peek at our bright new Harbor Romance Top, with its billowy bishop sleeves and a notch neckline, being exquisitely framed by Jes MaHarry’s Heal Your Heart Necklace.

With a look like this, we can’t help thinking: is spring coming soon?
