Sundance is pleased to introduce the stunning encaustic paintings of Bridgette Meinhold.

From her studio in a converted shipping container high in Utah’s Wasatch Mountains, Bridgette chronicles the majesty and mystery of her surroundings. Every day she is inspired by nature, especially the foggy landscapes and varied cloudscapes that frequent her remote home.

“My favorite thing in the world is to be out in nature, observing, experiencing and moving,” she says.

Bridgette lives with her husband and dog in a small A-frame cabin nestled in an aspen grove outside of Park City. From her front porch, she has access to backcountry skiing, hiking, biking and a whole world of inspiration. In winter, her studio and cabin can be snowed in for days or weeks at a time, which means running errands or delivering her artwork (very carefully!) by snowmobile.

A Unique Path to Artist

Bridgette’s journey to become an artist is as unique as her paintings. Originally from Oklahoma, she has spent time living on both coasts and in Germany. In between her travels, she earned two engineering degrees, including a master’s in environmental engineering from Stanford University.

Once out of school, she served as the first director of sustainability at our very own Sundance Resort. She also wrote extensively about green design and architecture, including a book about urgent housing solutions after natural disasters. Upon moving to Park City, initially to become a ski bum, she fell in love with the shape of the mountains and the magnificent groves of fir and aspen.

Eager to express her artistic talents, she quickly taught herself several art mediums, including what became her personal favorite: encaustic painting.

The Process of Encaustic

For anyone unfamiliar with encaustic, it is an ancient medium that is made from heated beeswax, damar resin and pigments. Because the hot wax dries quickly, it captures brush strokes and drips and allows rich layers and textures. Sometimes known as hot wax painting, it is recognizable in Bridgette’s works by its hazy, saturated appearance.

“Encaustic acts the part of the atmosphere,” she explains, “creating depth, space and even time in which to create my ethereal landscapes.”

Bridgette works from memory, her own photographs and en plein air to capture the way the atmosphere interacts with landscapes. She even uses Instagram to compose potential paintings on the fly.

“My goal is not to create picture-perfect landscapes,” she notes. “I am far more interested in capturing a fleeting moment – clouds pinned to the sky, the wind as it blows snow off a tree, the light as it hits the earth.”

Her art, as she likes to say, is equal parts adventure, experiment, release and retrospection.

Care of Encaustic Paintings

Encaustic paintings have been found that date back to the time of the ancient Greeks and Egyptians. Thus when properly taken care of – like you would with any fine artwork – encaustic paintings can last for a long, long time.

Such care is not difficult. Encaustic likes conditions that we humans like – not too hot and not too cold. By avoiding temperature extremes, direct UV light and excessive handling, an encaustic painting will not degrade over time.

A Place. An Idea Celebrating and
Enriching the Human Experience
- Robert Redford -

Our stores are more than just a place to shop. They offer an experience for your senses and sensibilities. When you enter a Sundance store you immediately notice the beautiful colors, textures, and of course our unique product throughout, but if you pause for a moment you’ll notice the special design touches that make each of our retail stores unique.

The Artful Journey Begins

Sundance Village was founded by Robert Redford in 1969 with a small rustic store that carried general goods and clothing as well as special, handcrafted items from American artisans. It was a unique shopping experience that for decades prompted visitors to call asking to have items they had seen sent to them.

20 years later, Robert Redford founded Sundance Catalog and wrote, “When you purchase something from this catalog, we appreciate the fact that the prime reason is enjoyment for yourself. But you are also supporting American craftspeople and efforts to enhance and preserve the environment.”

To this day, we continue to honor the original Sundance spirit in all of our retail stores with design elements incorporating nature, art, and community. We invite you to read below to discover how we create our unique shopping spaces.

Authentically Sundance

From floor to ceiling and front to back, each of our stores is designed to celebrate the Sundance heritage and local flavors through distinct artistic touches. While each store has a rustic elegant theme incorporating reclaimed wood, gold leaf, and weathered copper, our design team creates every store individually per the needs of the community and within the space we have available. A lovely example of this is the facade of the Alamo Quarry store in San Antonio, TX, which was crafted with stone from a quarry in the area.

The distinctive Sundance style starts before you even enter our stores. At the entrances you will find reclaimed wood doors made from old barns flanked by windows embedded with textured chicken wire glass. If you see a gold Sundance logo on any of the windows, take a closer look. These elegant logos are created by an artist applying a delicate 22-karat gold leaf using an old world gilding technique.

A Place to Discover

Once in the door, it’s time to pause and take it all in. In our “Front Porch” area you’ll find a curated showcase of the current, seasonal products we carry in all of our collections (apparel, home, etc.) framed by an array of beautifully handcrafted and hand-painted turquoise floor tiles.

Make your way through the illuminated display cases featuring artisan-crafted jewelry and look down to note the hardwood floors made from reclaimed oak fence posts. Don’t forget to look up and admire the Salon Glass Pendant Lighting casting a pleasant glow over Sundance merchandise displayed on one-of-a-kind wood tables.

As you move through the colorful clothing, accessories, and artisan items, you will notice the walls of the stores are not just painted. They are covered in two types of wallpaper: woven and cork with flecks of gold and are adorned with pictures featuring the most current Sundance fashion collection. You will probably see one of our feminine and sophisticated dresses displayed on a custom form produced by one of the oldest mannequin makers around today.

Toward the back of the stores our gathering room areas, with individually designed dressing rooms, offer a lovely respite for our shoppers and their guests alike. We’ve created homey, comfortable seating areas featuring one-of-a kind chairs, lighting, tables, and an oversized antique tin tile framed mirror. In the individual gathering rooms artist Jes MaHarry has created wall hooks made from repurposed railroad spikes. Each room also features an homage to our founder Robert Redford with an iconic image from one of his films.

Featured on the front of every cash wrap is a copper Sundance logo designed, weathered, and rusted for branded appeal. On the wall behind the counter is a curated collection of images and quotes by Robert Redford and classic Sundance images with iconic products. And full circle, you will often find an image of Mount Timpanogos near Sundance, UT - home to the first Sundance General Store, where our catalog was founded over 30 years ago.

An Invitation to Be Inspired

We hope you enjoyed this virtual journey through a Sundance store full of one-of-a-kind design elements and materials. We invite you to visit a store in each of these cities to fully appreciate how every location is not only a glimpse into the spirit of Sundance, but also a unique tribute to each community.

Protecting wild animals is important to Sundance artisan Jennifer MaHarry. We are fortunate that she shares this soulful passion with us through her photography. She is inspired to capture the beauty of animals and nature and plays an active role in contributing to their protection.

Jennifer’s unique style as a nature photographer is cherished worldwide by gallerists, interior designs, celebrities and fine art collectors. (As an aside, she also has a successful side career designing iconic movie posters, such as Captain Marvel, Mulan and A Wrinkle in Time.)

A Warmth for Wild Things

Jennifer’s creative vision is simple: to help connect viewers with her subjects and encourage respect for wild animals and natural places.

“I try to show wild animals as individuals with nuanced personalities and emotions,” she says of her imagery. “The more people empathize with these creatures, the more they’ll be inspired to protect them.”

Jennifer Maharry The Art Of Wild Horses Sundance Catalog

An Equine Bond

Jennifer has been a fan of horses for most of her life. As a child, she grew up riding horses through the forested trails of upstate New York. Her first experience with wild horses was to document rehabilitated mustangs at a sanctuary in California. Struck by their beauty and fierce family bonds, she went on to photograph wild horses in natural environments throughout the West.

It was through these travels that Jennifer witnessed cruel, government-led roundups of wild horses. She quickly learned the harsh and highly political reality of these beautiful creatures, who are rapidly disappearing from our public lands. An activist was born.

Protecting and Preserving

Today, Jennifer proudly donates a percentage of the net proceeds from her photography sales to the National Resources Defense Council and the American Wild Horse Campaign, a nonprofit preservation organization. To date, sales of her art have raised more than $100,000 for environmental charities benefiting all things wild. She is also a regular contributor to LAIKA, a magazine dedicated to, among other topics, showing compassion for animals.

Sundance is pleased to offer a selection of Jennifer MaHarry’s wild horse photographs for your home or office. Your purchase will help to share her love for these magnificent living things.

Food’s ability to bring people together is unparalleled. It is at the foundation of our cultures; it is the goodness we can bring to ourselves and others. When we celebrate food and retain its inherent quality, we nourish ourselves and our lives. We take the time to source good ingredients and produce. We support our local farmers and artisans, and we help sustain a beautiful cycle of goodness that extends to the people around us.

Apple And Olive Oil Cake

Serves 8 to 10

Using a good-quality olive oil makes a difference in this cake, which is dense and moist and just the right amount of sweet. It goes well at the end of the meal, but it can also be a nice treat in the morning with a cup of herbal tea.

Ingredients:
Butter, for the baking dish
3 large eggs
2.5 cups sugar
1.5 cups extra virgin olive oil
1.5 cups whole milk
Grated zest of 1 lemon
2 cups all-purpose flour, plus extra for the baking dish
1 teaspoons baking powder
1⁄4 teaspoon salt
Juice of 1⁄2 lemon
1 medium apple

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Butter and flour a 10-inch spring- form pan, or line a round cake pan with parchment paper.

In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs and sugar. Stir in the olive oil, milk, and lemon zest.
In another bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Slowly add the wet ingredients to the dry, stirring until just blended. Do not overmix. Pour the batter into the pre- pared cake pan.
Place the lemon juice in a large bowl. Peel the apples, and using a mandoline, thinly slice them, dropping the slices into the lemon juice to prevent browning. Arrange the apple slices on top of the cake batter.

Bake for 1 to 11⁄4 hours, until the cake is golden and a tooth- pick inserted into the center comes out clean. (The bake time may vary. If the cake needs more time but is browning too quickly, tent it with foil and continue baking.) Cool in the pan before unfolding.

Inspired by Nature, Refined by Hand

Robert Redford founded Sundance with the commitment to the balance of art, community, and nature. We are very pleased to feature artisan Ananda Khalsa this month and her collection that exemplifies the convergence of jewelry, art, and nature. Her unique pieces maintain a focal point on gorgeous, lush jewels, recycled metals, and charming hand painted images. Located in Northampton, Massachusetts, Ananda hand makes each jewelry item, striving to capture the timeless quality found in ancient jewelry, while creating pieces with a modern sensibility.

The Daintiest of Brushstrokes

Ananda’s delicately hand-painted pieces are charming works of Asian-inspired art reflecting the joy and purity of nature. An important influence in Ananda's work is the powerful symbolism behind each of the subjects she chooses to paint. Each finely detailed image is carefully created with acrylic paint on watercolor paper and is set beneath scratch-proof tempered glass. These miniature objet d'art are then expertly framed and set in recycled sterling silver or 22k gold.

Unique Designs for Each Stone

Ananda’s gemstone pieces draw inspiration from natural forms and the vibrant luminosity of dramatic jewels. From glowing garnet to rich amethyst, each luxurious gemstone is handpicked for it's exceptional qualities. Once a gemstone is chosen, Ananda designs a hammered metal setting exclusive to the shape and form of that stone to create an heirloom quality piece of wearable art.

We invite you to enjoy Ananda’s Spring Jewelry Collection, which inspires us to live with creativity from the beauty that surrounds us.

“This collection is a celebration of the earth’s most magical elements. I feel truly honored to seek out and work with such enchanting jewels, and to highlight each gem in its own way. Each piece is accented with a twinkling diamond, hammered gold, or a hand painted element.”

-Ananda

One of the simplest ways to freshen up your home this spring is with a gorgeous botanical bouquet. Our hand-painted Bountiful Botanicals come in a variety of distinctive bloom types and colors, and make stunning displays.

To help you create your own artistic floral arrangements, we offer a few simple steps below. In no time you’ll be enjoying the beauty of nature throughout your home.

Start with Color

Some of our favorite floral arrangements this year feature monochromatic flowers. Choose botanicals within a single color palette, using a variety of sizes for texture. Or stick with one flower type for a more classic looking design. Conversely, using different color tones opens up endless artistic possibilities – you can play with multiple textures and vases to capture a look of rustic elegance.

As you select shades of botanicals that will complement a specific area in your home, consider:

Enchanting Violets

The wisteria and claret work beautifully as focal flowers, while our heather and lilac make perfect fillers. For a striking effect, pair violet flowers with contrasting blooms from our yellow collection. For a subtle arrangement, combine violet blossoms with blushing pink hues.

Blushing Beauty

The pink-hued cerise and amaranth blossoms are stunning. Mix with a bouquet of sunny yellow blooms for a warm and welcoming arrangement.

Mellow Yellow

Our luminous yellow botanicals warm up any bouquet, but are also a cheerful classic on their own.

Earthy Sienna

Sienna is a neutral with striking texture that adds lush fullness to any arrangement.

Pick Your Florals

Once you choose a color palette, pick your florals. Look for botanicals with various sized buds, flowers, and stem lengths to play with scale. Consider the shape of the botanicals to fully enhance your arrangement’s texture. To create a more balanced, natural effect, use an odd number of each type of botanical.

Decide where to display your bouquet. Tall, full arrangements look best in an entryway or living room with high ceilings. Smaller arrangements work best in bedrooms, on side tables, or in the kitchen. Determine the vase size you need to fill that space. We suggest starting with one of our handcrafted, recycled glass vases:

Simone Vase
Vica Pickling Jar

Let Your Creativity Blossom

To craft your arrangement, place the botanicals in the vase to see how the colors, textures, and stem heights work together. Distribute the colors throughout the vase and place different textures and sizes around each other. Play around with various combinations. You may decide a fuller bouquet suits your home best, or possibly a more airy, breathable design.

Trim the stems to achieve your desired overall effect, especially when using a clear vase. With an opaque vase, you can bend the stem bottoms as needed.

Next, shape the botanicals to layer the bouquet. Gently bend stems to space the botanicals in the vase. Opening up the petals can also help bring more air into your arrangement. The goal is to create a natural, authentic look.

Elevate Your Home

Once you discover how much beauty your artful display brings to your home, you’ll want to add new arrangements as the seasons come and go. Not only does their beauty never fade, our botanicals make every space more warm and inviting.

To see more examples of our Bountiful Botanical arrangements from our or for more artful home inspiration, visit our Home Collection online.

Care Note: Our Bountiful Botanicals are designed to last. To keep your flowers fresh during the off-season, store them in a clean bin or container and put a large plastic bag over the top of them. When you get them out of storage, make sure to fluff the botanicals, bend the stems, and clean up each flower to ensure it looks fresh.

lance whitner painter sundance catalog

One of the principles of Sundance is that art should be a part of our daily lives, not just something to be viewed from behind glass during an occasional trip to the museum. We believe that by including art in everyday living, we enhance and enrich the simple pleasure of ordinary routines.

This season we are excited to feature a selection of spirited paintings by artist Lance Whitner. Radiating a lively energy so very much like the artist herself, her paintings joyfully honor the natural world around her and are the perfect addition to our Home Collection.

Lance fell in love with the Colorado Rocky Mountains after attending the University of Colorado, Boulder as a Ceramics major in their Fine Arts program. She settled in Steamboat Springs where she currently resides in a purple house with her photographer husband, 3 animated kids, a dog named Betty, a cat named Cowboy, and a horse named Ashe.

lance whitner painter sundance catalogBeing a mountain bike rider, skier, hiker and yogi, Lance pulls inspiration viscerally from her time spent in nature that is then spilled effortlessly onto her canvases, watercolor paper and sketchbooks.

Distinctive Layering

Using a loose, intuitive technique Lance layers shapes and colors to create richly textured, dreamlike scenes. Playful shifts in perspective pull the eye from one area to the next, and deceptively simple images often hide layers of underpainting, patterns, and marks that draw the viewer in for a closer look.

Lance, a self-taught painter, explains, “I use my unique visual vocabulary of color, shape, line and mark to interpret the places my passions take me. Through my paintings, I strive to pass along the spirit of this joy and free expression.”

Sublime Equine

Lance’s colorful light-filled pastoral paintings capture the freedom and expansive skies of the American West. These pieces have palpable energy and when hanging in a room serve almost as a window peering out onto the great outdoors.

Radiant Florals

Lance’s floral paintings are delightful compositions in color, depth, and texture achieved through meticulous layering of oil-paints in vibrant shades. Her artistry and true appreciation of the beauty found in nature imbues each piece with a distinctive sense of balance, joy, and liveliness.

“When you purchase something from this catalog, we appreciate the fact that the prime reason is enjoyment for yourself. But you are also supporting American craftspeople and efforts to enhance and preserve the environment.” - Robert Redford
