Inspired by Nature, Refined by Hand

Robert Redford founded Sundance with the commitment to the balance of art, community, and nature. We are very pleased to feature artisan Ananda Khalsa this month and her collection that exemplifies the convergence of jewelry, art, and nature. Her unique pieces maintain a focal point on gorgeous, lush jewels, recycled metals, and charming hand painted images. Located in Northampton, Massachusetts, Ananda hand makes each jewelry item, striving to capture the timeless quality found in ancient jewelry, while creating pieces with a modern sensibility.

The Daintiest of Brushstrokes

Ananda’s delicately hand-painted pieces are charming works of Asian-inspired art reflecting the joy and purity of nature. An important influence in Ananda's work is the powerful symbolism behind each of the subjects she chooses to paint. Each finely detailed image is carefully created with acrylic paint on watercolor paper and is set beneath scratch-proof tempered glass. These miniature objet d'art are then expertly framed and set in recycled sterling silver or 22k gold.

Unique Designs for Each Stone

Ananda’s gemstone pieces draw inspiration from natural forms and the vibrant luminosity of dramatic jewels. From glowing garnet to rich amethyst, each luxurious gemstone is handpicked for it's exceptional qualities. Once a gemstone is chosen, Ananda designs a hammered metal setting exclusive to the shape and form of that stone to create an heirloom quality piece of wearable art.

We invite you to enjoy Ananda’s Spring Jewelry Collection, which inspires us to live with creativity from the beauty that surrounds us.

“This collection is a celebration of the earth’s most magical elements. I feel truly honored to seek out and work with such enchanting jewels, and to highlight each gem in its own way. Each piece is accented with a twinkling diamond, hammered gold, or a hand painted element.”

-Ananda

One of the simplest ways to freshen up your home this spring is with a gorgeous botanical bouquet. Our hand-painted Bountiful Botanicals come in a variety of distinctive bloom types and colors, and make stunning displays.

To help you create your own artistic floral arrangements, we offer a few simple steps below. In no time you’ll be enjoying the beauty of nature throughout your home.

Start with Color

Some of our favorite floral arrangements this year feature monochromatic flowers. Choose botanicals within a single color palette, using a variety of sizes for texture. Or stick with one flower type for a more classic looking design. Conversely, using different color tones opens up endless artistic possibilities – you can play with multiple textures and vases to capture a look of rustic elegance.

As you select shades of botanicals that will complement a specific area in your home, consider:

Enchanting Violets

The wisteria and claret work beautifully as focal flowers, while our heather and lilac make perfect fillers. For a striking effect, pair violet flowers with contrasting blooms from our yellow collection. For a subtle arrangement, combine violet blossoms with blushing pink hues.

Blushing Beauty

The pink-hued cerise and amaranth blossoms are stunning. Mix with a bouquet of sunny yellow blooms for a warm and welcoming arrangement.

Mellow Yellow

Our luminous yellow botanicals warm up any bouquet, but are also a cheerful classic on their own.

Earthy Sienna

Sienna is a neutral with striking texture that adds lush fullness to any arrangement.

Pick Your Florals

Once you choose a color palette, pick your florals. Look for botanicals with various sized buds, flowers, and stem lengths to play with scale. Consider the shape of the botanicals to fully enhance your arrangement’s texture. To create a more balanced, natural effect, use an odd number of each type of botanical.

Decide where to display your bouquet. Tall, full arrangements look best in an entryway or living room with high ceilings. Smaller arrangements work best in bedrooms, on side tables, or in the kitchen. Determine the vase size you need to fill that space. We suggest starting with one of our handcrafted, recycled glass vases:

Simone Vase
Vica Pickling Jar

Let Your Creativity Blossom

To craft your arrangement, place the botanicals in the vase to see how the colors, textures, and stem heights work together. Distribute the colors throughout the vase and place different textures and sizes around each other. Play around with various combinations. You may decide a fuller bouquet suits your home best, or possibly a more airy, breathable design.

Trim the stems to achieve your desired overall effect, especially when using a clear vase. With an opaque vase, you can bend the stem bottoms as needed.

Next, shape the botanicals to layer the bouquet. Gently bend stems to space the botanicals in the vase. Opening up the petals can also help bring more air into your arrangement. The goal is to create a natural, authentic look.

Elevate Your Home

Once you discover how much beauty your artful display brings to your home, you’ll want to add new arrangements as the seasons come and go. Not only does their beauty never fade, our botanicals make every space more warm and inviting.

To see more examples of our Bountiful Botanical arrangements from our or for more artful home inspiration, visit our Home Collection online.

Care Note: Our Bountiful Botanicals are designed to last. To keep your flowers fresh during the off-season, store them in a clean bin or container and put a large plastic bag over the top of them. When you get them out of storage, make sure to fluff the botanicals, bend the stems, and clean up each flower to ensure it looks fresh.

lance whitner painter sundance catalog

One of the principles of Sundance is that art should be a part of our daily lives, not just something to be viewed from behind glass during an occasional trip to the museum. We believe that by including art in everyday living, we enhance and enrich the simple pleasure of ordinary routines.

This season we are excited to feature a selection of spirited paintings by artist Lance Whitner. Radiating a lively energy so very much like the artist herself, her paintings joyfully honor the natural world around her and are the perfect addition to our Home Collection.

Lance fell in love with the Colorado Rocky Mountains after attending the University of Colorado, Boulder as a Ceramics major in their Fine Arts program. She settled in Steamboat Springs where she currently resides in a purple house with her photographer husband, 3 animated kids, a dog named Betty, a cat named Cowboy, and a horse named Ashe.

Distinctive Layering

Using a loose, intuitive technique Lance layers shapes and colors to create richly textured, dreamlike scenes. Playful shifts in perspective pull the eye from one area to the next, and deceptively simple images often hide layers of underpainting, patterns, and marks that draw the viewer in for a closer look.

Lance, a self-taught painter, explains, “I use my unique visual vocabulary of color, shape, line and mark to interpret the places my passions take me. Through my paintings, I strive to pass along the spirit of this joy and free expression.”

Sublime Equine

Lance’s colorful light-filled pastoral paintings capture the freedom and expansive skies of the American West. These pieces have palpable energy and when hanging in a room serve almost as a window peering out onto the great outdoors.

Radiant Florals

Lance’s floral paintings are delightful compositions in color, depth, and texture achieved through meticulous layering of oil-paints in vibrant shades. Her artistry and true appreciation of the beauty found in nature imbues each piece with a distinctive sense of balance, joy, and liveliness.

“When you purchase something from this catalog, we appreciate the fact that the prime reason is enjoyment for yourself. But you are also supporting American craftspeople and efforts to enhance and preserve the environment.” - Robert Redford

how to use cbd sundance catalog blog

Got aches and pains? Have damaged skin? Feeling anxious or stressed? Sundance is pleased to introduce CBD-infused products that we’ve carefully curated from two trusted companies, Daughter of the Land and Floramye, to help you relax and feel better.

What is CBD?

Most people have by now heard about the popularity of CBD therapy. CBD is short for cannabidiol, a chemical compound derived from the cannabis plant, which is the source of hemp fibers. Hemp has a long history of human use, with clothing, ropes and many other products commonly made from it.

CBD-infused products contain only miniscule amounts of THC, which is not nearly enough to provide any psychological effects.

What is CBD used in?

CBD is used in a variety of products, many designed to offer relaxing and calming feelings in the user. These can include balms, lotions, tinctures, oils, edibles, skin creams, shampoos and even pet products.

What are its health benefits?

At Sundance, we take a cautious approach to promising CBD health benefits.

There is certainly strong anecdotal evidence that CBD products have helped many thousands of people to feel better. CBD is believed by these users to decrease anxiety and stress, improve sleep, help soothe musculoskeletal and nerve pains, and clear skin of acne and eczema.

Medical science, of course, relies on large, carefully designed studies to formally prove or disprove a product’s efficacy. Because CBD products are still relatively new, most such studies are ongoing. So, for now, we think CBD health claims should be viewed with at least some caution, even if your relatives or close friends rave to you about how it has benefited them. CBD is currently FDA approved only as an anti-seizure medication.

What CBD products we offer?

Our CBD products are a joy for the senses, imparting beauty and wonderful scents in addition to their healing benefits. They come from two companies we trust and respect:

Daughter of the Land specializes in organic skincare products designed with the lowest possible impact on the environment. We carry the all-organic Chamomile Calming Balm that mixes the herbal healing properties of arnica montana with CBD oil. It helps you to look and feel your best.

All-organic Chamomile Calming Balm Sundance Catalog

Floramye, which takes its name from an old French perfume house, blends CBD with fragrant essential oils. Their wellness products promise to soothe skin, reduce pain and restore beauty.

Our choices include:

Chamomile Calming Balm
Rose Hip Bath Soak
Balancing Facial Oil

Revitalizing Elixir
Balancing Facial Oil
Calming Body Cream

Keep in mind that topical products such as body creams are absorbed by the skin and hair follicles, but never reach your bloodstream. This allows you to focus CBD’s benefits only on where it is applied. On the other hand, ingestible CBD, such as Floramye’s elixir, are absorbed internally and spreads through the body by the bloodstream. This type of product is intended to offer whole body benefits.

Whether you’re a CBD first timer or already a devotee, you can count on our curated selection of CBD products to be of the highest quality.

sundance sustainable cleaning supplies

Can household cleaning supplies be crafted sustainably and effectively? Absolutely. Our collection of high-quality cleaning products from Andrée Jardin, Fer á Cheval, and Makaua takes a page from the past by offering simple, handmade tools and soaps that are highly functional and double as beautiful decorative accessories for your home. They’re a wonderful complement to the artisanal heritage of Sundance.

Dusting Supplies from Andrée Jardin

Today’s disposable plastic products were not always the norm for cleaning supplies. These classic items from Andrée Jardin prove that newer is not always better. Their beautiful brooms and dusters are handmade the traditional way, using real French beechwood frames and genuine hog bristles to provide many years of service. They’re truly made to last!

The company has hundred-year-old roots in the French city of Nantes, where Georges Renée Julio started out as an apprentice brush maker. His company flourished for decades, until globalization and inexpensive plastic flooded the market. Determined to change this state of affairs, his two grandchildren reissued the original brushes, naming the new company after their beloved grandmother. Today, they’re keeping alive French craftsmanship and know-how with every authentic duster or broom you purchase.

Organic Soaps from Fer á Cheval

Soap should always be simple, natural and organic, traditions that Fer á Cheval has been following for the past 150 years. The company was named after the French words for “horseshoe,” following the quaint 19th century custom of giving a business a name evoking good luck or happiness. Once one of hundreds of local soap makers – the iconic product of Marseille – today they’re known proudly as the French city’s oldest soap factory.

After all these years, Fer á Cheval hard soaps continue to be crafted using four basic ingredients: sea water, vegetable oil, ash and lye. They hand-select the ingredients to create the bases for their soaps, passing on this know-how from generation to generation. (They’ve even been designated by the French government as a Living Heritage Company for the excellence of their expertise). Their proprietary age-old recipe results in a certified organic product that is treasured for its gentle cleaning power. They’re soaps that feel good and you can feel good about.

Makaua’s Natural-fiber Waste Basket

In the southern mountains of Mexico, palms grow abundantly. The local population has made use of this natural fiber for countless generations, carefully cutting selected leaves in a manner that does not kill the plant, but rather encourages regrowth.

Today we’re proud to offer the Makaua Natural Waste Bin Baskets, which merge traditional, sustainable palm-braiding techniques with contemporary design. Use them as decorative baskets or waste baskets – they look beautiful either way.

As a company of artisans, producers and designers, Makaua provides jobs to skilled locals who live in one of the most economically fragile areas of the country. These workers are also able to create these baskets directly from their home, helping to keep their families united.

Keeping Traditions Alive

All these products celebrate a slower, more organic style of manufacturing that is harder than ever to find these days. We’re proud to offer them to you now to help elevate the beautiful and sustainable living we believe in.

“I paint who and what I know, who I am, and what I imagine to be.”

So explains Erika Carter, the one-of-a-kind painter whose exquisite work we’re so proud to feature at Sundance this spring. A lifelong resident of Santa Barbara, California, Erika describes her paintings as being greatly influenced by her frequent travels to central Mexico over the past 20 years, where her grandparents immigrated from in 1915.

“The cultural traditions they passed on, combined with my own experiences in the country, shaped my ideals and are the inspiration for my work,” she explains.

Erika waxes poetically about her wonder-filled visits to Mexico over the years. Her grandfather became a groundskeeper of a prominent estate, where Erika’s mother and her siblings were raised. The immaculate architecture, the beautiful colors and textures of the flora and fauna inspired Erika and her imagination. The influence of Mexican Culture stayed with her and now expresses itself in her paintings rendered in acrylic wood and tin.

“As a child I was fortunate enough, with my six siblings, to often skip back and forth between the vastly different houses, with free-roaming chickens, rabbits, and goats,” she says. “The warm smell of albondiga soup and homemade tortillas enveloped one end of the pathway, and a grand three-storied staircase, secret gardens, paintings, and sculptures graced the other end.

“The colors and textures of these two beautiful homes,” she adds, “and the lush green and flowery walk that connects them, have become the aesthetic I naturally default to in my work.”

This spring, Sundance is pleased to feature several unique, one-of-a-kind acrylic-on-wood paintings from Erika’s “Las Mujeres” collection. The paintings include a series of painted women, animals, flowers, and more that come in various sizes to fit any wall or home decor space. Find a handful of her one-of-a-kind paintings below or shop Erika's collection on our website.

sundance catalog alida sneakers

Street-smart Spanish Sneakers

We’re crushing hard these days on the charmingly hip Alida Sneakers from the ARO footwear brand. Designed in Barcelona, Spain, these street-smart shoes really stand out, thanks to eye-catching colors and their fresh interpretation of the classic sneaker design.

The visual element, however, is only part of the Alida’s appeal. When you put them on, you quickly discover how light, breathable and comfortable sneakers they are. This is due to their ultra-flexible, well-cushioned footbeds and airy fabric/leather uppers. The result is true all-day walking comfort.

Artisanal Craftsmanship

We also appreciate the story behind these sneakers. ARO shoes are not mass-produced, but rather they are crafted by classically trained shoemakers from Romania. These talented cobblers use modern materials of the highest quality, while they employ a variety of traditional shoemaking techniques. The subtle detailing of these shoes is exquisite.

One modern construction upgrade is the rubber vulcanizing technique they use to craft each shoe’s footbed. This process of heat-cured bonding is preferred over the usual glues or adhesives because it creates soles of superior durability.

The Distinctive ARO Look

ARO shoes are immediately recognizable thanks to their bright and vibrant colors, clean design and the prominent “ring” logo. The company was founded in Barcelona in 2005 with the desire to create new types of sneakers featuring stylish looks. With the Alida, they have found the sweet spot of modern design and old-school construction. We think you’ll love them as much as we do.

With spring weather coming soon, a pair or two of Alida Sneakers from ARO will make your casual adventures more stylish and comfortable.

Merino wool from Australia is not like ordinary wool. And Woolloomooloo does not make ordinary shoes. That’s why we’re so excited to offer this innovative brand for the first time in our Winter Catalog.

The Australian History

Woolloomooloo uses only sustainably sourced merino wool from their home country of Australia. A brief history: Merino sheep were introduced to Australia from Spain, soon after colonization in 1797.

While the harsh Aussie landscape proved too unforgiving for much of the introduced flora and fauna from Europe, the merino sheep thrived and since have become an iconic part of the country’s landscape.

Merino wool is an all-natural fiber with an unsurpassed reputation for quality. It contains lanolin, a natural wax that makes the wool feels soft, not scratchy, which is ideal for anyone with sensitive skin. It’s insulating, breathable and controls moisture, a combination that keeps you warm in winter and cool in summer. Merino wool from Australia is considered the world’s finest and is regularly used in elegant Italian suits and clothing.

Soft, Seamless Comfort

After years of development, Woolloomooloo learned to combine merino wool with 3D knitting technology. The wool is expertly spun and knitted into seamless, flexible and oh-so-comfortable shoes. They’re also lightweight, naturally odor-resistant and designed to last for years. Each upper is paired with an ergonomic footbed for support in all the right places.

Lastly, we love that merino wool is completely organic and chemical-free, so it’s not just your feet that will feel good about your purchase.

For winter travels or summers at home, we are excited to support Woolloomooloo with our featured Baaarbara Shoe. These Woolloomooloo shoes offer a stylish and sustainable way for your feet to be comfortable.
